Iris photography is still a relatively little known photography genre in the UK. It has far more traction in the US and is slowly gaining awareness in the UK. Therefore there are a lot of questions associated with this genre of photography.
Iris photography is quite an intimate experience with a total stranger. Much like a visit to an optometrist.
Whilst I (the photographer) won’t personally be all up in your face, the end of the camera lens will be around 15cm from your face. So you’ll be looking down the barrel of a lens.
There are various options when it comes to lighting of the eye. But most photographer opt for a flash to get maximum exposure with minimal light exposure. A second light, constant light is also typically used to provide sufficient light on the eye for the camera/photography to be able to focus correctly for optimal sharpness.
There are understandably many questions surrounding this fairly new photography genre so without further ado, let’s get stuck in.

Other Curiosities & Concerns
Can you take an iris photo if I have an eye condition (e.g., heterochromia, cataracts)?
We can capture most irises, even if you have heterochromia (different-coloured eyes), cataracts, or other conditions. If you’re unsure, contact us beforehand.
Will my iris photo change if I get it taken at different times?
Your iris patterns remain the same, but lighting and minor changes in eye hydration can slightly affect the appearance.
Do you store my iris images, or are they deleted after delivery?
All iris photography images are retained for a minimum of 6 months. Experience tells me that clients will often get in touch months after their photoshoot to request additional prints or to request that I resend their included image as they have somehow lost it.
It is therefore imperative that you place any orders for prints or items within 6 months of your photoshoot.
The raw images and edits are stored securely in the cloud for redundancy purposes. They are stored in a manner that there is no identifying information stored with the image in accordance with GDPR guidelines.
Can I use my iris image for personal branding or artwork?
Yes.
Is iris photography available for children?
Yes. However, from experience it is best suited for children 6 years and over.
However, you know your child far better than I, if you are confident that your child will be able to sit still (it is absolutely imperative when doing macro photography that the subject is absolutely still as even the smallest movement can distort the image) then by all means go ahead and book for them.
Please be aware however that should your child not be able to sit still and as a result a good image of their eye cannot be captured, a refund will not be possible.
Can I get a refund if I don’t like my iris photo?
I’m afraid there is a no refund policy for iris photography.
This is down to the fact that to produce your classic edit iris image can take up to 2 hours of careful and meticulous editing.
The photoshoot fee covers both the photoshoot time and the initial editing for your classic edit image.
